The First World War saw death and destruction on a scale not previously recorded in human history. Modern instruments of war
like the machine gun, airplane, and tank all made their debut during this bloody conflict. More efficient weaponry combined with trench warfare tactics saw casualty rates escalate to unprecedented levels. Finally, after four long years, an armistice was reached on November 11th, 1918, but not before the the Great War claimed the lives of an estimated 17 million people.
Entitled "Soldiers Charge," the obverse of the World War One Centennial coin features a somber soldier preparing to charge out of his trench to assault the enemy amidst machine gun fire. The reverse depicts "Poppies in the Wire" reminiscent of the famous poem "In Flanders Field" composed by Lt. Col. John McCrae after losing a close friend in battle.
